The Cabbage Plant (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a widely grown cool-season leafy vegetable belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Known in India as Patta Gobhi, it forms a dense, round head of smooth or crinkled green, red, or purple leaves. Cabbage is valued for its crisp texture, mild flavor, and high nutritional content. Cabbage thrives best in cool climates, with an ideal temperature range of 15°C to 25°C. It grows well in fertile, well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. The plant requires full sunlight for at least 5–6 hours a day and regular watering to maintain even moisture throughout the growing season. Seeds are sown in nursery beds and transplanted after 4–5 weeks when seedlings reach about 10–15 cm in height. Heads are ready for harvest within 80–100 days depending on the variety. Cabbage is packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and dietary fiber, which boost immunity and aid digestion. It is eaten raw in salads, cooked in curries, or used for pickling. Easy to cultivate and highly nutritious, cabbage is an essential crop for home and commercial gardens alike.
